RENAL FUNCTION TEST
The renal is an important organ in the body, which is located behind the abdominal cavity or retroperitoneal and has the function of removing waste products and excess fluid in the blood. In addition, the renal also helps control blood pressure and produce hormones needed by the body. When the renal are impaired, substances that are not useful will accumulate in the body, causing various types of diseases. For example, urinary tract infections, renal infections, renal stones, renal cancer, and other diseases.
At Virtu DigiLab, you can get a complete renal function test service with fast and accurate test results. Supported by sophisticated and high-quality medical equipment, Virtu DigiLab can provide precise diagnosis results.

Understand & Prepare Your Procedure
Examination of renal function is a test procedure carried out to find out how well the renal function is working. This procedure will also detect any disturbances in the organ. In this renal test procedure, urine and blood will be taken and observed in the laboratory.
This examination is recommended for someone who is suspected of having acute renal failure or chronic renal failure. Symptoms in someone who has kidney damage:
- Experiencing difficulty and pain when urinating.
- Hematuria, namely the presence of blood in the urine.
- Foamy urine.
- Increased frequency of urination with reduced urine output.
- Edema, namely swelling of the hands and feet due to fluid buildup.
- Experiencing shortness of breath.
- High blood pressure.
- Loss of consciousness or fainting.
- Arrhythmia, which is a disturbance in the heartbeat.
Apart from someone who has renal damage. Several health conditions are required to do renal function tests. These health conditions include:
- Heart disease is a condition when the heart has problems, such as disorders of the heart arteries, heart rhythm, heart valves, or disorders due to birth defects.
- Diabetes.
- Renal stones are disorders of the urinary tract due to the presence of salt or chemicals in the urine in the form of crystals.
Examination of renal function is carried out routinely, and some are only additional examinations. Several types of renal function tests, including:
- Urea or blood urea nitrogen (BUN), is a test used to determine the level of urea nitrogen in the blood which is a residue of protein metabolism, and this substance should be excreted through the renal.
- A urine test is performed to determine the presence of protein and blood in the urine which indicates a decrease in renal function.
- Glomerular filtration rate (GFR), is a test used to see the ability of the renal to filter waste products from metabolism in the body.
- Blood creatinine is a test to determine the level of creatinine in the blood. Creatinine is a waste product resulting from the breakdown of muscles which will be excreted through the renal. High creatinine levels in the blood can be a sign of renal problems.
Preparation before doing a renal function test depends on the type of test to be performed. Some common preparations that doctors recommend are:
- Avoid strenuous physical activity on the day of urine collection, as strenuous physical activity can increase protein levels in the urine.
- Drink sufficient amounts of water on the day of the examination, which is about 8 glasses, so that the urine sample needed for the examination is sufficient.
- Fill in the form regarding personal data, such as age, height and weight, and gender, which are important for calculating eGFR.
There are no specific guidelines regarding how often a person should do renal function tests. However, in people at high risk of experiencing renal damage, renal function tests are routinely recommended by doctors.
